Atlantic Wharf, Cardiff

A major development of 711 student accommodation units comprising cluster rooms, studios, plus accessible rooms and ‘Premium’ rooms.  Communal accommodation provides a gymnasium, cinema room, meeting room and external sports facilities.  The arrangement of the building provides multiple sheltered and private areas to enjoy.

Designed over 10 floors, the intention of this proposal is to create a building which contributes to its context in terms of scale and material appearance. The upper storey is designed to be subservient – with glazing to create lightness.  Using contemporary materials will provide a modern building within this area. The elevation treatment has a vertical emphasis and utilises a limited palette of materials, including: metal rain screen cladding and vertical glazed curtain walling, providing visual interest.

This mixture of transparent, curtain wall glazing and solid grey metal rainscreen cladding breaks up the elevations with a vertical rhythm. The window proportions with a mixture of small to larger panels have been carefully considered to achieve a balance of solid and void. Repetition and order of arrangement of windows is utilised to unify the elevation.

Proposal involves demolition of an existing car showroom.

The scheme provides a strong presence at a prominent location, with good views across Cardiff and towards Cardiff Bay. Situated a short walk from Cardiff city centre with good access to main railway stations and University Campus.
